Lowrider arte (or “art” in the English spelling) is a unique style of art, developed over the last several decades. It is deeply connected to the California Chicano/Mexican culture – thus the frequently-used mixed English/Spanish spelling.
Other influences on the artistic style include tattoo art (especially in the popular line drawing version of lowrider arte), and graffiti art with its spray techniques. Lowrider Arte is also the title of a print magazine devoted to the style.
As noted above, lowrider arte is intimately linked to the Brown Pride movement which grew from the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Even further influences include Aztec civilization, 50s doo-wop and 60s soul music, hip-hop and more.
Subject matter is wide-ranging in lowrider art, but frequently-seen themes include gorgeous cars, beautiful women, Christian iconography, clowns, skulls, flags, birds and much more.
As a matter of history, lowrider culture, and thus lowrider arte, originally sprang from the Mexican-American/Chicano culture in southern California, then moved on to influence Latino culture generally. Since the ’90s, both the cars and the style have influenced urban youth culture more widely, notably in West Coast hip hop. Today the lowrider culture is diverse and widely inclusive, but it remains of particular importance to the Chicano community.
