1961 Chevrolet Impala

Since the very first Impala rolled off the Chevrolet assembly line in the mid-1950s, this car was an instant classic. And the Impala lowrider has represented the pinnacle of lowrider style more than any other car ever produced. More than 12 million Impalas later, this classic still represents the best of American car making, and just hearing the name brings to mind the Impala lowrider, even in people who have no clue what a lowrider is.

The Impala debuted at a 1956 car show as an offshoot of the Corvette – in fact it was referred to in the press as the Corvette Impala. By the time of its official introduction in 1958, the Impala had become the top of the line option in Chvrolet’s Bel Air line. On top of special styling and trim, as well as deluxe interiors, the Impala also sported the highest price tag in the entire Chevy line. Nonetheless, the Impala was an instant hit, and by the next year it had graduated to a separate model all its own, available in both coupe and sedan. This was the beginning of the Impala lowrider phenomenon.

By 1961 the phenomenon would be complete, with the introduction of the “world’s first muscle car”, the 1961 Chevrolet Impala SS. The SS package was oriented toward performance, nothing more or less. Only high performance engines were available, and the top was the newly-introduced 409 cubic inch V8, the engine that started Detroit on competition for ever increasing engines.

Further redesigns and tweaks took place as the sixties continued, and technology and styles changed. The Impala kept up with these changes at an amazing pace for usually slow moving Detroit. For example, the 1965 Impala became a more streamlined, less boxy car. In 1967, by contrast, saw a longer and heavier looking Impala. By the end of the 60s though, the Impala excitement was fading, and the SS model was discontinued in 1969.

In the 70s though, further redesigns and the popularity of the customized Impala lowrider led to renewed success. By 1972, 10 million total Impalas had been sold, topping all other full sized cars in American history. In 1977, Chevy’s response to the gas crisis was to downsize the Impala, in a risky move that could have alienated the public. Fortunately, the redesign worked, and the Impala again set all time sales records.

The 80s however were not kind, and by 1983 the remnants of the Impala were found only in a single four door model. The 90s saw somewhat of a renaissance, but the Impala line ended in 1996, only to reintroduce it in 2000.

Beach cruisers, which some people simply know as cruiser bikes, were the standard American bikes for decades. Anytime you see a bike in an old movie from the 30s, 40s, or 50s, you’re probably looking at one of these classic beach cruiser bicycles. Schwinn created the cruiser back in the 30s, as a sturdier alternative to existing bikes; the construction was actually based on motorcycles of the day. Add a pair of fat tires for stability, and you’ve got the recipe for a wave of popular biking.

By the 50s, cruisers were everywhere, often loaded with chrome and accessories. But soon, imported European racing bikes began to chip away at the health and fitness-oriented part of the bike market, while our beloved lowrider bikes overtook the cruisers in the customization sweepstakes. Soon, cruisers were considered old-fashioned, and many ended up rusting in garages all over suburbia.

However, the story has a happy ending. In 1995, the Schwinn Company marked their 100th anniversary with a reissue of their Black Phantom cruiser. Its success inspired other vintage manufacturers to release their own classic reissues, and newer companies to create their own beach cruiser bicycles. As all things retro regained popularity, cruisers became a regular sight on the streets…and things came full circle.

Today, beach cruiser bicycles are a huge part of the bike market – just take a look at the bike department in any major retailer and you’ll see cruisers and cruiser-influenced bikes throughout. With their smooth ride, comfortable seating, low center of gravity, and classic styling, beach cruiser bicycles are popular with lowrider fans, kids, hipsters, families, and just ordinary folks.  And this time, they seem here to stay. Chevy Impala

Over the decades, certain models have become the most common lowrider cars. The Chevrolet Impala (seen here), either hardtop or convertible, has long been one of the most common lowrider cars, especially the 1964 and earlier models.

Although the early 60s Chevy Impala is highly sought after by collectors, others swear by somewhat lesser-known American cars like the 1978-88 GM “G-bodies”. These include the Buick Regal, Chevrolet Monte Carlo,  Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, and Pontiac Grand Prix. These cars and their earlier mid-70s versions are often seen as entry-level lowriders, though this doesn’t mean they should be looked down on.

Although the 70s and 80s models may make up the majority of common lowrider cars, a large group of aficionados specialize on restoring and/or customizing 1930s-1960s American cars. These can be some of the most beautiful and flamboyant of lowriders.

the most artistically and culturally significant lowriders, as the preserve the heritage of American car culture, while creating brand new pieces of automotive art.

In some (mostly European) countries, cars like the Morris Minor, Volvo PV544, air-cooled VW Beetle, Ford Zodiac, Vauxhall Victor and Vauxhall Cresta (or other car with Trans-Atlantic styling) are sometimes used as substitutes for the more common lowrider cars. This is generally due to factors such as cost, lack of American car imports, difficulty obtaining parts, or even a nationalistic desire to build a unique lowrider out of a domestic vehicle. In Japan however,  lowriders are almost exclusively created from American cars.

Lowrider arte

Other influences on the artistic style include tattoo art (especially in the popular line drawing version of lowrider arte), and graffiti art with its spray techniques. Lowrider Arte is also the title of a print magazine devoted to the style.

As noted above, lowrider arte is intimately linked to the Brown Pride movement which grew from the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Even further influences include Aztec civilization, 50s doo-wop and 60s soul music, hip-hop and more.

Subject matter is wide-ranging in lowrider art, but frequently-seen themes include gorgeous cars, beautiful women, Christian iconography, clowns, skulls, flags, birds and much more.

As a matter of history, lowrider culture, and thus lowrider arte, originally sprang from the Mexican-American/Chicano culture in southern California, then moved on to influence Latino culture generally. Since the ’90s, both the cars and the style have influenced urban youth culture more widely, notably in West Coast hip hop. Today the lowrider culture is diverse and widely inclusive, but it remains of particular importance to the Chicano community.

Used lowriders for sale? No way, right? Isn’t the lowrider the ultimate in personal expression, made for you and only you? Aren’t you supposed to build them from scratch? Well, some people might look down on you for having someone else build and customize your ride, but there are some good reasons to consider checking out used lowriders for sale.

For one thing, you simply may not have the skills to do the work of customization. Not everyone knows how to install a custom hydraulic system. And if you don’t know how to do it right, better not do it at all! Second, you may not have the time to put in. That shouldn’t stop you from having the ride you want, should it?

Low rider trucks may be pickups, but they’re not meant to haul dirt, nor are they off road vehicles. Old school rims…custom interiors with unique upholstery…custom paint jobs with numerous thin layers of varying colors, metal flakes and hand-painted graphics…driver-controlled hydraulic pump systems…these machines will make you re-think the definition of the word “truck”.

Of course, low rider trucks (and mini-trucks) have lowered suspensions like other classic low riders, and often unique body modifications, powerful custom sound systems – everything you never imagined seeing in a pickup or van. The key is the low suspension, but some other characteristics are often found: loads of chrome and/or gold details, custom exhausts, and let’s not forget those whitewalls (often spoked) that tuck under the wheel well to give the lowest possible ride.

Ultimately, low rider trucks (and the whole lowrider culture) are about self-expression. If a tricked-out show truck with wild flame graphics is your taste, go for it. If you like a more traditional look look that just happens to be lowered, then that’s you. It’s the classic, cool, low-to-the-ground profile that really defines low rider trucks. Check it out:

Low rider cars (AKA “lowrider” cars) are outrageously customized classic cars, with suspensions dropped low to the ground. The opposite of a fast little sports car, the lowrider is made to go slow and low. This expression of the owner’s attitude helps explain why low rider cars have become more than transportation: they’re a culture, an art form, a way of life.

Low rider cars have been around for decades, and the cars that have been converted into lowriders are as old as the 1930s. The key is the low suspension, but some other characteristics are often found: custom paint jobs in flamboyant colors, whitewalls (often with spokes), flame graphics, custom exhausts, and let’s not forget those awesome hydraulic systems that can launch many lowrider cars clear off the ground!

In the end, low rider cars and the whole lowrider culture are all about self-expression. If neon or LED lights are your style, go for it. Low rider bikes (or “lowrider” bikes if you prefer) have been tearing up the pavement since the 1960’s. Inspired by the awesomeness of the culture known as low rider, bikes imitating the style were developed. Legend has it that kids who were too young to work on cars got tired of being pushed away by dads and older brothers, until they took matters into their own hands, and invented low rider bicycles. Soon, the style took off, and makers like Schwinn started mass producing low rider bikes, or at least muscle bikes that could be turned into lowrider bikes.

So what are low rider bikes anyway? Well, as applied to bicycles, lowrider style means lots of chrome, big ol’ handle bars, white-wall tires, sissy bars, banana seats. custom upholstery…in fact, everything customized wherever possible. The more the better. Any kind of custom paint is especially welcome on low rider bicycles too. In fact, the best lowrider bikes, the most respected ones, are built all the way from scratch.

Really, low rider bikes and the whole lowrider culture are all about self-expression, so the sky is the limit. If you can do it to a bike with your own two hands, it’s you. But in the end, it’s the classic, cool, low-to-the-ground profile that really defines low rider bikes. You know ‘em when you see ‘em. Take a look:
